安布羅斯·葛溫奈特·比爾斯（英語：Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce；1842年6月24日－1913年或之后）是一位美國記者、短篇小說、傳說與諷刺小說作家。著名作品有短篇小說《鷹溪橋上》（An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge）和諷刺小說《魔鬼辭典》（The Devil's Dictionary）等。
生平概況
安布羅斯·比爾斯生于俄亥俄州的梅格斯，在印第安納州長大。中學肄業一年后去印刷所充當學徒。1861年4月入聯邦軍充當志愿兵，參加南北戰爭。1866年去舊金山，1868年任《新聞信札》雜志編輯。1871年發表短篇小說《鬧鬼的山谷》。1872至1875年間旅居英國，為倫敦《玩笑》等雜志撰稿，替被放逐的歐仁妮皇后(拿破侖三世之妻)編輯了兩期《燈籠》，并以多德·格里爾的筆名出版《魔鬼的樂趣》(1873)、《在加利福尼亞淘出的金塊和金粉》(1873)、《來自空腦殼的蜘蛛網》(1874)等作品。1877年后在舊金山《阿爾戈英雄》等雜志任編輯。1896年遷往首都華盛頓哥倫比亞特區。1913年，由于厭倦美國的生活而去戰事紛起的墨西哥采訪農民領袖潘喬·比利亞，后即失去消息。有人猜測他死于1914年1月對奧希納加的圍攻。
比爾斯的短篇小說都帶有憤世嫉俗思想，喜歡用諷刺筆調處理死亡和恐怖的主題。以致于被人們稱為“辛辣比爾斯”（Bitter Bierce）。主要作品有短篇小說集《軍人與平民的故事》(1891)，后易名為《在人生中間》(1892)；《這種事情可能嗎?》(1893)，其中敘述的故事離奇怪誕，有強烈的“世紀末”色彩。此外，還有《憤世者詞典》(1906)，后易名為《魔鬼詞典》(1911)，尖銳辛辣又不失機智和幽默。《鬼東西》（1894）是他的一個短篇恐怖小說，篇幅雖短，但懸念迭起，寫法與構思均不同凡響，曾被選入美國博尼和萊烏賴特出版公司1919年版《最好的鬼故事》一書。
失蹤事件
1913年10月，71歲的比爾斯離開華盛頓哥倫比亞特區，參觀一個曾經參加過的南北戰爭戰場。12月，他通過路易斯安那州和得克薩斯州，穿越埃爾帕索到達墨西哥，這是革命斗爭之地。在華雷斯城他作為一個觀察者加入了農民革命軍潘喬·比利亞的隊伍，在這個位置上他目睹鐵拉布蘭卡戰役。
比爾斯已經伴隨著潘喬比利亞的軍隊到奇瓦瓦的城市。他最后一次與這個世界溝通是他寫給摯友布蘭奇·帕廷頓的一封信，日期是1913年12月26日。在這封信最后，“至于我，我明天就要離開這里去一個未知的目的地，”之后他消失得無影無蹤，他的消失成為在美國文學史上最著名的一個謎團。
懷疑論者喬·尼克爾認為，這封信不曾被其他人發現：所有的證據在于一個屬于他的秘書和同伴，卡麗·克里斯琴的筆記本中提到的信，她粗略的聲明原件已經損毀。
在由牧師杰姆斯·利納特記錄的科阿韋拉州莫哈達山脈的口頭傳說中，美國來的比爾斯在這里的公墓里被槍決。然而，尼克爾發現這個故事很不可思議。他引用比爾斯的朋友和傳記作家沃爾特·尼爾的話說，1913年，比爾斯還沒出走的時候，患有嚴重的哮喘，并且嚴厲批評了潘喬·比利亞的軍隊。尼爾認為，比爾斯不可能去了墨西哥，加入了比利亞的軍隊。
