長期從事臨床放射診斷。早期臨床研究工作集中在神經放射影像（Neuroradiology），尤其是頭頸部與神經系統腫瘤放射診斷與鑒別診斷。近年在國家杰出青年科學基金、CMB基金、國家自然科學基金重點項目、科技部973、863課題和美國NIH R01基金（NSFC聯合）等資助下，聚焦精神放射影像（Psychoradiology）的臨床難點，對重大神經精神疾病的客觀表征做了系統深入的磁共振影像研究，率先發現"腦結構通過功能鏈接影響癥狀"并被American Journal of Psychiatry(IF=13.5)大篇幅述評，認為在“解決腦如何聯系行為和臨床癥狀這一關鍵科學問題”上做了開拓性工作。相關精神放射影像研究被腦功能成像奠基人、美國科學院院士Raichle教授等多次在Nature Reviews上撰文引用，指出為精神疾病提供了客觀影像學依據。相關成果入選“中國百篇最具國際影響力論文” ? 、被遴選為美國臨床醫師CME繼教學分文章、并寫入衛計委國家統編教材和國際放射學百科全書。
基于在精神放射影像的工作，先后為第24屆國際醫學磁共振學會（ISMRM）和第102屆北美放射學會（RSN A）年會教育課程（Education Course）授課、受邀為第23屆ISMRM年會作大會NIBIBNew Horizons Lecture榮譽冠名主題演講、并赴哈佛大學、耶魯大學、斯坦福等大學講學。并作為首位中國本土學者，受邀為Radiology撰寫綜述，被時任ISMRM主席Pipe教授贊譽為“pioneering psychoradiology”。 2010年獲美國CMB杰出教授獎；2012年獲Radiology頒發的Editor's Recognition Awards和國家衛計委頒發的第十三屆吳階平保羅*楊森醫學藥學獎（臨床醫學類） ? ；2013受聘為耶魯大學醫學院客座教授；2016年獲首屆中華放射學會‘突出貢獻獎’年度金獎 ? ; 2017年當選國際醫學磁共振學會精神疾病MR組秘書長暨候任主席（Future Chair）。精神放射影像Psychoradiology作為Radiology的新興學科分支，已成為我國在國際放射學領域發揮引領作用的重要學科方向之一。
【注】 “Psychoradiology”是國際放射學領域首次由我們中國人命名并為國際同行認可的醫學專業分支，已被國際放射學大百科全書radiopaedia收錄。

Qiyongis recognized for seminal contributions to translational imaging characterization of mental illnesses using MRI, and he is pioneering thepsychoradiology, the new branch of radiology for psychiatry.”
*Note:Psychoradiologyis a term that describes a growing intersection between the fields of psychiatry and medical imaging. In clinical practice, this term indicates the use of radiologic approaches in psychiatric illnesses, spanning from diagnosis to planning and monitoring treatment. Analogous to the Psychosurgery of surgery for mental disorders, it is an emerging branch of radiology in close association with the neuroradiology for neurology.
As a matter of fact, following the development of clinically oriented psychiatric imaging, there is emerging a new branch of Radiology, which we and others have termed “Psychoradiology”, which is a promising subfield for clinical Radiology focusing on psychiatric disorders (this term is analogous to psychosurgery (surgery for psychiatric disorders), and neuroradiology (radiology for neurological disorders).
