周世良，主要研究重要植物類群遺傳多樣性的起源、時空結構、脫氧核糖核酸鑒定和保護，研究類群如五加科人參屬(Panax)、芍藥科(Paeoniaceae)、蓮科(Nelumbonaceae)等。他利用多種分子標記手段分析人參屬不同群體的遺傳變異，并將遺傳變異與地質、地理和生態環境因素結合分析，擬揭示人參屬不同群體分化的遺傳和生態環境基礎。

通過對芍藥科（特別是芍藥屬牡丹組）物種遺傳分析，揭示物種之間、同一物種不同居群之間的遺傳關系，分析居群的擴展方向和路線。在此基礎上分析栽培牡丹的起源、相互關系以及遺傳特征圖譜，為品種鑒定和遺傳育種提供科學依據。同時，利用滇牡丹遺傳多樣性比較豐富的特點，研究滇牡丹的克隆生長特點和花色多態性的分子機理，進一步了解形態多樣性的遺傳基礎。另外，通過國際合作，在全世界范圍收集蓮科植物的材料，用高靈敏度的分子標記分析不同地點的蓮的來源、遷移路線、太平洋兩岸不同物種的群體的現代分化特點，探討東亞——北美間斷分布植物類群的成因。他還利用脫氧核糖核酸序列信息為每種植物設計特有的條形碼，建立植物材料的快速準確鑒定體系。
