第64屆奧斯卡金像獎于1992年3月30日在美國加州的洛杉磯音樂中心（L.A. County 音樂 Center）舉行，主持人是比利·克里斯托（Billy Crystal），《沉默的羔羊》成為歷史上第一部獲奧斯卡最佳影片獎獎的恐怖片，也是第一部在獲得該獎項前已經發行家用媒體的電影。

第64屆奧斯卡金像獎提名名單于1992年2月19日PST早上5:38（UTC13:38）由學院主席卡爾·莫爾登和女演員凱瑟琳·特納在比佛利山的塞繆爾·戈爾德溫劇院公布。《豪情四海》以10項提名領跑，其次是獲9項提名的《刺殺肯尼迪》。
《沉默的羔羊》是繼1934年的《一夜風流》和1975年的《飛越瘋人院》以來第三部贏得最佳影片、導演、男主角、女主角和編劇五個重要獎項的電影。《美女與野獸》成為首部獲奧斯卡最佳影片獎獎提名的動畫長片，執導《街區男孩》的約翰·辛格頓成為首位獲奧斯卡最佳導演獎提名的非裔美國人，并且也創下了該獎項提名人年紀最輕的新紀錄。

由于之前一年的典禮獲得成功，并且贏得了多項艾美獎，美國電影藝術與科學學院于是連續第三年請來吉爾·凱茨擔任節目制作人。他將1992年典禮的主題定為“電影純粹的快樂”，稱“電影給我們帶來歡笑、浪漫、歷險和對自己更深層次的理解。考慮到如今正在發生的那些不同尋常的事件，我們仍然可以看電影這點實在是太棒了。”

抗議活動

1992年7月，本屆頒獎典禮在第44屆黃金時段艾美獎角逐中獲得了九項提名，并于次月贏得三座獎項，分別是綜藝節目類杰出編劇、杰出音樂編導和綜藝或音樂節目類杰出服裝設計獎。
