美國(guó)州份，是指美國(guó)聯(lián)邦內(nèi)部的任意一個(gè)成員州，權(quán)利是在個(gè)體的州和聯(lián)邦政府之間分配。在美國(guó)憲法下，聯(lián)邦政府可以對(duì)明顯由憲法賦予的內(nèi)容立法，這就使得權(quán)利的管制中心仍然由州保留。
由獨(dú)立宣言而從英國(guó)獨(dú)立的美國(guó)，剛開始的時(shí)候有13個(gè)州。州可以通過(guò)國(guó)會(huì)的批準(zhǔn)加入聯(lián)邦，現(xiàn)在美國(guó)一共有50個(gè)州。
起初的時(shí)候，在美國(guó)憲法中沒(méi)有關(guān)于“州份是否可以獨(dú)自任意脫離聯(lián)邦”的法律。但是在經(jīng)過(guò)南北戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)后，1869年，經(jīng)由聯(lián)邦法院對(duì)于得克薩斯州 v. 懷特（Texas v. White）的判決決定，若有任何一州要脫離聯(lián)邦，那么其決定必須經(jīng)過(guò)其他州的許可，才可合法離開聯(lián)邦。
