影響性
相對于奧斯卡和格萊美獎，靈魂列車更大的程度上區分了膚色來進行提名。拋開其他因素，靈魂列車在廣義上來說是屬于黑人自己的格萊美（或者奧斯卡，因為有演員一類獎項）。其影響力，在黑人歌手（藝人）心中自然不言而喻。雖然，進入21世紀以來因為很多原因唱片業遭受打擊。在這樣的情況下，一股潮流帶起的RNB和Rap熱潮讓業界人士對唱片業又燃起了信心。為了鼓舞更多的歌手以及音樂人創作和推出更有創意的專輯，在隨后的幾年里開始越來越多的南非白人歌手也榮幸被提名競爭獎項。
早在90年代獎項曾備受不少爭議，其中原因是白人對于獎項明顯將其膚色排外。官方曾多次向外界示好，并不是獎項有意排除其他人種（膚色）。其實是因為獎項本身是忠于黑人音樂本身，概念完全不同。官方表示，靈魂列車最佳歌手的定義是R&B/靈魂/爵士類歌手被官方認可才會獲獎，獎項不存在任何不公平。至此，靈魂列車以鼓舞更多的歌手，希望為R&B/靈魂音樂融入更多新的色彩而做出貢獻。
