Red Garland是美國人， 1923年生于達拉斯，1984年辭世。他原名叫William Garland，“Red”其實只是他的綽號。早年他曾吹過單簧管和中音薩克管，18歲才開始學鋼琴，兩年后就在費城的爵士樂俱樂部里做起了駐場鋼琴師。在二戰后的1946到1955年間，他積極參與紐約和費城兩地的爵士樂演出，合作的對象包括“菜鳥”Charlie Parker、Miles Davis、Coleman Hawkins、“總統”Lester Young和Roy Eldrige等，后來就加入了Miles Davis的五重奏，他的個人聲譽正是在與Miles合作期間建立起來的。和同時代的很多爵士鋼琴手一樣，Red Garland的演奏風格受到了Bud Powell、Ahmad Jamal甚至Nat King Cole的影響。在Miles樂團的時候，與他合作的節奏組樂手是低音提琴手Paul Chambers和鼓手費城 Jo Jones。在離開Miles樂團之后，Red Garland自己又先后組建過幾支三重奏與五重奏，但是尤以與Paul Chambers及鼓手Arthur Taylor組成的三重奏廣受好。
