朱利安·桑茲生于英國約克夏。早年求學期間經常參與戲劇活動，大學在Central School of Speech & Drama攻讀表演課程，畢業后與友人合組劇團，并致力編寫電影劇本。首次幕前演出，是短片《Broken English》，之后因《窗外有藍天》成為閃亮明星，片約不斷，并曾與法、意等國導演合作。
