喬治·羅伊·希爾，1922年生于美國明尼阿波利斯。在耶魯大學攻讀作曲，并獲得博士學位1963年他正式從影，第一部導演作品是舞臺劇改編的《 Period of Adjustment 》，后來又執導了《 Toys in the Attic 》(1963)，《 The World of Henry Orient 》(1964)，《Hawaii》(1966)。但都不大理想，直到1969年導演《Butch Cassidy and the Sundace Kid 》，使他一鳴驚人，轟動全世界，一躍成了大導演。之后與保羅·紐曼、羅伯特·雷德福合作的《騙中騙》更是囊獲了當屆奧斯卡多項大獎！
1974年導演的《刺激》，堪稱是他懷古作品的最高峰，此片奪得了包括最佳導演奧斯卡最佳影片獎的許多奧斯卡金像獎。他一直拍比較有商業性的作品。
